Tip from your fellow dev
Mark Foster took home the second place prize for the North American Region in the 2019 Facebook Developer Circles Community Challenge for his submission, Photobooth AI. He wanted to share these brief tips with his fellow devs to help you make a winning submission!
Hackathons are a great way to expand your horizons and try something experimental. Are you still hunting for that great idea that will make your entry standout?
Take a look at the blog or release notes for the category and technology that interests you. Feel the freedom to reach for that experimental, new feature that's only available behind a feature flag. A hackathon is your time to tinker!
Think about potential mashups. Can you integrate Facebook technologies with other services in a creative new twist? Here are some ideas: natural language understanding, computer vision, machine learning, modern browser APIs, etc. Many cloud service providers offer easy to use API's you tap into for a low-cost or even free tier.
Once you have your big idea, focus on building the minimal version of your project that will demonstrate the concept. Don't get sidetracked with add-on features and making it look pretty until you have something that will show your core vision to the judges.
Do you have your big idea in the can? Add some polish. If you need some imagery for backgrounds and such, check out https://unsplash.com/. Add some icons, sound effects, 3D assets, animations, etc. Demo your project to some friends and ask for honest feedback. Most of all, have fun!
Do you have a tip you’d like to share with your fellow devs? Be sure to share it in the Challenge Facebook Group, we know they’ll appreciate it!
If you have any questions about the hackathon, please post on the discussion forum.
